Where the heck did the thumbnails in the Open dialog box go?? I am dependent much of the time on visually identifying files in conjunction with the names of the files . . . .

Seriously -- it depends on the system software. With AI files that have been saved with the PDF compatiblity option turned on, Apple's OSX will display a preview of the file, although it depends on the file size (if it's too big a file, the OS wont' spend time trying to draw a preview of it).
