tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
When I print a tiled illustrator CS page to an Acrobat file, I have to type in the ‘.ps’ suffix (after the file name) in order to get the file to save as a postscript page. I can only then open it in Acrobat.
I was under the impression that if I selected ‘Acrobat file’ from the printer description dialogue box (when I go to print) that it would automatically print the job as postscript?
Is this correct?

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
Charles you want to make a multipage pdf correct?
Go to the print dialogue choose Adobe PDF as the printer and either the Default Adobe PDF as your or choose Adobe PDF at the bottom of the list of PPD. then choose tile full pages from the set up section of the print dialogue.
If you actually want to print a .ps select Adobe Postscript file and any postscript printer either and at the bottom of the print dialog choose printer in the printer dialog choose Output Options and select Postscript instead of PDF and select a location then hit save and then when you return to the print dialog choose print.
You won't have to add .ps and you will get what you want.

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
Wade, assuming the same PDF parameters, do you get the same or a different
PDF result if you:
1) Print to Adobe PDF directly from within the AICS Print dialog
2) Print to PostScript, then drop that file on Distiller to get the PDF?
Thanks.

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
No! If you print to .ps you only get one of the tiles, which ever is selected, if you print to PDF you get a multipage pdf automatically assembled.
Let me clarify that that is if you have tile full pages selected if you have tile single full page it will only print what is selected as the page size selected. if you have tile imageable area selected it will of course tile that. But the .ps will only print the selected tile.

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
Ahh. OK. Good to know. Just one more quickie:
If you're NOT worried about multi-page - just wanna make a standard, single page PDF from an AICS file - is there any difference between printing with the Adobe PDF driver and printing a PostScript file, then dropping on distiller?

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
Yes you did and the answer is no to your question no difference. If you made a postscript file that way from ID you would end up with a multiple page pdf once distilled.

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
When I make PDF files using the Print to PDF method (instead of Save As PDF), and then open that PDF back into AI CS, CMYK images have been converted to RGB at lower resolution, all layering is lost, and type has become tiny units of point type. But it does make for a small file size.

Re: tiled illustrator CS page to Acrobat 6 pdf
Gary, I was actually not asking about the Save As PDF command. I was wondering about the difference between Print to PDF on one hand and Print to PostScript in order to use the Acrobat Distiller application to make the PDF on the other.
With respect to your experience with Print to PDF, however, you're getting that result because of the job settings you're using when you print. If you changed them (either in the Print dialog or from within the Distiller application) you'd retain your CMYK images... and, of course, produce a fatter PDF.
