Default time sync advise

hi

i have a number of windows 2000 and solaris 8 machines in my
environment
and i would like to sync the time of all these machines with a time
server.
Has anybody had experience with managing time synchronisation between
multi platform machines like this.? I know xntpd can do the job for
solaris but for windows machines do i need other software to work with
xnptd ?? Sorry for asking about windows in the post, but would really
appreciate some advice if you have done time sync between windows and
solaris machines before...
thanks for the assistance

You might run ntp and Samba on some convienent Solaris machine, then
use "net time" on the Windows boxes to sync at some reasonable
interval. It would be better to run something that can do ntp, but
"net time" works with no additional Windows fiddling. Its not
particularly accurate, but will be enough for reasonable file
timestamps.

You can use NTP throughout. IMO there is no reason not to use NTP. You
just disable the Windows Time Service and install the NTP from
http://norloff.org/ntp/ or http://www.five-ten-sg.com [at bottom left]
(see also www.ntp.org), make sure port 123 is allowed through your
firewall (and through XP's own, if any of those are added with ICF
[Internet Connection Firewall] enabled), and away it goes. The "NT"
version works on NT4, 2000 and XP. Ideally you want the Solaris machines
as the "servers" and the Windows machines as the "clients", as Solaris
is slightly better than Windows at time keeping, though we are talking
milli-seconds, not gross problems. One of the advantages of using NTP
across the patch is that you can monitor the time sync on all the
machines easily from one point.
