Default To view an avi in macintosh

I just want to view an .avi movie file in OS X but I couldn't open it in
    any application programs.

I tried "quick time" and "windows mediaplayer".
But, both programs just show error messages.

Do I need any other software in addition to the viewer program? Or is
there any problem in my OS X operating system?

I would appreciate it if anybody help me.

    Regards,
    Young

One thing it is important to understand is that there is no such thing as a
standard .avi file. An .avi file can actually be any one of about a hundred
    different formats or so.

Each of these different competing standards uses a different technique to
compress and store the video. Some of these standards are patented; some are
not. Some can be played on Macs; some cannot.

What that means is that there are some .avi movies that can't be played on a
Mac, period. Some can't be played on a Windows 95 machine. Some can't be played
on a Windows 98 machine. Some can be played, but only by certain player
    software.

The state of .avi video is a mess--different, incompatible standards for
creating .avis; different, incompatible software for playing .avis...you get
    the picture.

Quicktime Player can usually play them, but you need the right codec.

The problem with AVI is that it's really a container for a bunch of
different audio & video formats. To play an AVI, you need a "codec"
that knows how to decode the particular format used in that AVI file.
If the video is encoded as Divx format you need a Divx codec, if it's
encoded as Xvid you need an Xvid codec, and so on. The codec doesn't
actually play the video, it just decodes it for the player program.

If you try opening the AVI file in Quicktime player, it should tell you
what kind of codec you need. (You may have to use the 'show movie info'
    or 'get movie properties' command.)

Two places to look for codecs are <http://www.3ivx.com> and
    <http://www.divx.com>.

Thank you for a most excellent explanation. I'd been wondering about
    that myself.
