Too many cast members - Macromedia Director Basics

what exactly is "too many"? as far as I know cast-size is unlimited and only constraint to memory and/or disk size. I remember having used external casts with close to 200 MBs. Just take care it doesn't crash or get lost... security reasons like this call for small cast modules. You could also use linked images, i.e. cast members with an external file reference, so your imges reside as imagefiles on disk and get loades when referenced. reference, so your imges reside as imagefiles on disk and get loades when
    referenced.

In any case: With huge casts it is good practice to establish some
reasonable "preload" and "unload" routines and to make sure that not too
many (best none) cast members get loaded automatically right from the
beginning (member property in the member property dialogue box, also
    accesible via lingo).

    Hi Brett,

The size of a cast is actually unlimited. There is a setting in the
preferences where you can limit the number of members in cast that are
    available. Just change that setting.

Default getting properties can eat ram

be aware that reading some properties of members, like dimensions can
require them to be loaded into memory this can slow a scanning process.

just searching names would be ok

About an year ago I worked on a project that required a slideshow of car images. I had an external cast with about 1400 images and the cast itself (.CST) was more than 1GB in size. In order to enter all the images I had to use a small trick: I added the images in groups of 25-30 (maybe more, I don't recall the exact number) and saved the cast a lots of times. In other words, I entered 25 images, saved and then I entered the next 25 images.

Somehow Director only stores in memory all the cast members if they are not yet saved, otherwise it seems to me that Director is able to load/unload members accordingly to its needs and system resources.

By the way, this was done in Director 8.5.1. I don't know if Director MX is different.

    Best regards,

are you using the demo or educational versions of Director? those casts are the only ones I know of that are limited.
