Tool that makes a half serpentine line - Adobe Indesign Windows

Take a figure 8 and draw a line down the longitudinal axis. I want to know what tool to use to make a serpentine line representing half the top lobe and half the bottom lobe. Some steps would be helpful....

    Have you tried the scissors?

    I'd agree with Robert about using the Scissors tool. You can then delete the segments you don't want.

    However, you'll have more luck doing it in Illustrator. Then you have available some path-modifying commands not in InDesign like Object > Path > Join and Object > Path > Average. As well as Pathfinder commands not found in InDesign.

    Thanks, when Adobe came to my city I saw it demonstrated, and seems to me she took a tool, drew something, and then flipped it somehow. Does that sound familiar?

    I'll try the scissors. Thanks again.

    Try this:

    (1) Draw a circle by choosing the Ellipse tool. Hold down the Shift key as you drag it out to constrain to a circle.

    (2) Choose the Scissors tool. You see four anchor points around the circle. Click with the tool on the top and the bottom anchor points. This cuts the circle in half

    (3) Choose the Selection (solid arrow) tool. Delete the right half of the circle.

    (4) Select the remaining half circle. On the Control palette, click the lower right point of the proxy on the left end of the palette (the proxy selects the transformation point).

    (5) Hold down the Option key and from the Control palette menu, choose Flip Both. Holding down the Option key while selecting the command duplicates it while performing the flipping.

    This has limitations. If you zoom in, you'll see that the two half circle don't quite touch. You'll need to tweak the position. There is no tool like in Illustrator to join the two paths. You'll have to group them.

    A variation on Steve's suggestion:

    * Cut a circle or oval in half
    * Select one half with the Selection (black arrow) tool.
    * Zoom in and Shift-drag or Arrow/Shift-Arrrow it until the end points of the stroke align. For fine adjustments, set Preferences > Units & Increments > Keyboard Increments > Cursor Key to 0.01 pt.
    * Shift-Select both halves.
    * Join them with Object > Compound Shapes > Make.
