Toolbar choices disappear (File, Layout, Object, Table, View)

My coworker is using InDesign 1.5 on Windows 2000 w/Active Directory. He has been using this program for two years without incident. The past week, he has had a problem that I have never heard of before and have no clue on what causes it or what to do about it. The set up is:

He is working on a football media guide for our university. The book is over 60 pages. He said he had just placed an image, resized it, and hit Control-zero to zoom out to see how it looked on the page. When he typed the keyboard shortcut he zoomed out ok but then he saw that the following toolbar options were missing: File, Layout, Object, Table, and View. The ones that were left were in this order: Type (with only the Font choice), Help (all choices), Edit (with only the Preferences choice and that had only the Online Settings choice), and Window (with just Cascade and Tile choices). As a check, I had him do Control-O to see if he could get the file open box to work but it didn't work.

With a bit more poking around, he discovered that if he logged out of the network and relogged in to "This Computer" only, that he was back in business. But that lasted for about a week and then the same thing happened. He zoomed out and half his toolbar options disappeared. He is now dead in the water until he can find his CD with the software on it to try to unstall/reinstall.

As anyone ever heard of this happening before? And if so, what causes it and what fixes it?

Delete the preference files.

You'll be hard pressed to find many people who even used 1.5. And those
of us who did have upgraded at least once to 2.0 and now to CS.

I highly recommend upgrading at this point. 1.5, while functional,
simply isn't anywhere near the state-of-the-art that CS is.
