Default Totem fails to play streaming media

With apologies to DSeuse:

Totem doesn't just fail here-or-there ... but TOTEM fails everywhere ...
It fails at SAIL(.tv) with gails of hail ... and flops at SI with babes
a'trail ... so I think that TOTEM just can't work with streaming media
it's no mean quirk ...

Have you tried totem xine or totem gstreamer. I use xine becuase
gstreamer doesnt play dvds and other formats for me. Also I like VLC.
Make sure you have the decoders. Ohh, and I hate poetry lol.

Good luck

Why wouldn't TOTEM have such a media "codec"? That's like a
word-processing program not having a list of the alphabet.

Anyrate, will you tell me how I can acquire such codecs?

Not all players come with all codecs, some, such as a DVD or MPEG2
codec, you must pay for (in the US anyway). I've gotten different
codecs different places. So it depends what media you want to play.
Mepis 3.4.3 comes with all the codecs I've needed, strangely enough, but
that distro is known for its multimedia support. For DVDs and MPG
files, you'll want libdvdcss2, and for Windows media support, you'll
need w32codecs (I think that's what it's called). Search for them in
Synaptic's package manager. If you don't find them there, google
"w32codecs," and you'll find what you need.

Google for 'Automatix' it will install the codecs you require.

I found this site useful:

Thanks CoSTa , and all who have made suggestions ... I've tried
most ideas. Various MM formats have thus been enabled , and others not
for reasons I can't imagine. As I'm typing I'm listening to "live" DEAD on
MPlayer ... I'll keep "plugging" away ...

thanks again to all.

You probibly need add the extra/ restricted repositories.
( restricted repositories means that becuase ubuntu is entirely free it
does not supply .... yada yada yada , how ever, you can get the them
easily )

Then you need to install the codecs.

Refer to the following websites and google for the step by step
instructions. Again I like xine better.

This is a guide for the older ubuntu but it still is applicapble for
most things: http://ubuntuguide.org/

This is for the newer version. Pay attention to where it says to add
extra repositories. http://www.cs.cornell.edu/~djm/ubuntu/#nvidiadriver

Another note you can install software more easily as newbie with the
Synaptic Package Manager located Under SYSTEM - ADMINISTRATION. Go ahead
and take a look at some of the software you might want to add. I suggest
that you try VLC it seems to handle many different types of video media
well.

A clarification of the xine and gstreamer. I am saying that I use
totem-xine, not totem-gstreamer.

I will say that linux seems to be a little more work when starting but
if you sit back and look you will find that the reason linux is harder
is becuase you already know the windows world. You don't have to do
anything in windows to get the dvd play back, right. Actually you do.
You have to purhcase software. Becuase the software came with the
hardware you did not relize that you were buying it serperately. Windows
does not play DVD's. Additional Software plays DVD's. This is the same
as linux, only in linux you don't go to the store everytime you want
something. Example of this is MS office. It is extremly expensive. Linux
uses other office applications like Openoffice which is free.

Best of luck and don't quit on linux. It gets easier.
