TouchUp Text Tool not working?
I have Max OS X 10.4, Acrobat 8.1.2 and cannot get the TouchUp Text Tool to work? Can select text and delete/copy/paste etc but cannot add/change/modify any text from the keyboard? All keyboard text keys not working or changing data?
Was using Acrobat 7 and it worked great, however this version is just not cooperating.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks,
Ron

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
That not the way Touch up text works. It works as its described. If you run to words together and need to add a space. Or you misspell a word. and need to redo a word or two, That's what it does. But you can't add whole sentences paragrapghs or phrases.
The best way to do if you have original document is redo the page in question and remake the pdf using a slightly different name. Then open original and go to replace pages. choose the proper page range and start at correct position. Then all your edited changes will be incorporated and if you have created a form you forms set up will be incorporated in the new version save as the original file. If its a straight PDF (no form ) then you won't have to make uny changes at all. IF a Form and you added a new form item then you will have to setup that new form item.

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Thanks for your reply...
Yes I understand and agree... But with the current Acrobat, I am not able to add/change or correct anything? The only keyboard function that appears to work is delete? For example, I can't correct or replace a simple spelling, single character in a word. I understand and agree the tool is not intended to add sentences, but it is intended to provide the user the ability to make simple corrections and changes and that's what I'm not able to do?

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
If your wanting to remove or rplace a letter after clicking on Touch up text. mouse to last letter of word or two you want to replace. wait intil you see a blink cursor. now hit delete key to remove offend letter if a word continue until word is gone now type replacement.
try that and report back.
Some one else might be along and they can put their two cent worth in as well.

I can delete characters within a PDF file, but still cannot type replacement characters.

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
That's odd usually if you can remove characters you can usually replace them (type them).
The PDF your working on hasn't had security turned on or had digital rights turned on (where you can you can insert comments or perhaps you have a form where everyone can fill out send email.
If you have such you need to make a copy that doens't have any of these rights turned on. before you can edit.
IF not I'll have to pass and let someone else figure out what's going on.

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Thanks for your input on this problem. Very strange... I've tried everything I can think of and still cannot change the text? The simplest test was to create a one line doc. with the Text Editor, save it as both a PDF and text file. Opening and creating respectively with Acrobat, still cannot change text in either copy? Checked the security and everything is "Allowed" so that's not an issue. Checked fonts and they are indeed listed and available. Almost appears that the keyboard is just being recognized? Just don't know? I think I'll just drop back to a previous Acrobat release..
Thanks again,
Ron

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
What if you create a brand new text box inside Acrobat? Using the
touchup text tool, hold down ALT and then click inside a blank area
inside the document - can you now edit THIS text?

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Thanks for all the help and input on this problem.
Still have not been able to get it to work properly and don't have the time or inclination to continue. Have dropped back to Acrobat 7 and although it's slower, everything works properly.
Will try 9 at a later time when I have more time.
Thanks again,
Ron

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
I am having exactly the same problem .. I can delete text but no response to any text input. I have the blinking cursor but I am also unable to create a new text box. Also problems with 'embedded' fonts - I'm getting a font substitution when the embedded fonts are already on my system and active.

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Susan,
Yes that's exactly the same situation I have. Never did figure out what the problem is/was so I just went back to Acrobat 7 and it works great!
Please let me know if you ever find out what the problem is...
Thanks,

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
I am having this same problem with MacOSX 4.11 running the most current updated Acrobat Pro 8.1.2 and FontAgent Pro 3. Embedded fonts are all showing OK in the PDF, but I cannot type in any character on the keyboard using the Touchup Text Tool. I can delete text but nothing else. A couple months ago I was able to change a misspelling on a 8-page newsletter I did in QuarkXPress 7.31, saved as a Press-Ready PDF and opened in Acrobat Pro 8. Now nada! I wonder if the most recent security update on Acrobat 8.1.2 (which does not show as being modified) and the MacOSX 4.11 security update from Apple Software update (which also does not show as being modified) may be the cause of this problem.
Just thinking out loud. No one from the Windows side seems affected. Someone from Adobe Acrobat or Apple needs to chime in here to help figure out what is causing this text font problem to all of a sudden crop up.
Thanks, Ted

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
I have Mac OS 10.5, so it's not the OS. And I don't use any font management except for the font book in the OS (works just as well as any other). I've checked the distiller (not that it will do any good for regular pdfs in the first place) and all my fonts are there.
I had problems with some other CS3 updates before, and I've done the Adobe recommended fix - which helped the other programs but not the Acrobat Pro 8.1.2
Does anyone know if trashing the preference file (as you do in Pshop when having problems) will work? I haven't tried it yet.
I, too, am back to v 7.
In the meantime I'm filing a bug report to Adobe.
<http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform>
I wonder how widespread this problem really is?

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Susan, Ted,
Although it's not reassuring, it's somewhat comforting that others in the community are experiencing the same problem! Hmmm....
I'd really like to be kept in the loop to know if Adobe has or perhaps suggests a solution. I wonder how many other Mac users are experiencing the same issue? I've spent hours on this and am no closer to a solution. I've spent too much time chasing this bug. Not very productive... BTW, I did trash all the Adobe preferences, did a clean installation, no luck... same problem.
Thanks very much for all your interest and feedback.

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Put in a Bug Report on this problem ... it's unlikely we'll hear from Adobe on a temporary fix --- it appears we've all done all that we can to figure out the problem on our own. It's time to tell the coders at Adobe --

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
I have this problem, too. It started about a week ago. Until then, I had been able to edit AND enter text using the Touch Up Tool, and then suddenly, I couldn't.
These were on PDFs that I generated on my machine with digital signature enabled, so I thought that I had perhaps set the document to be locked after signature, but a coworker was able to edit the PDF on his computer. So I tried a PDF that was a couple of years old and posted on one of our message boards, and I had the same problem.
So, I guess I wrote all this to say that this is NOT just an issue with PDFs created on other computers/systems and taht seems to have randomly popped up.
Thanks,
Stephanie

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Also, I'm using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 on Windows XP. I cannot find duplicate fonts anywhere to test Susan's suggestion.
Any ideas?

Re: TouchUp Text Tool not working?
Stephanie --
There's one other thing to try that I think I missed in the messages above. This text tool problem popped up again for me right after I did an update install for Illustrator and this fixed the Acrobat Text tool problem redux:
Under the Help Menu dropdown there's a option called "Repair Acrobat Installation". Lcik on that and see if that fixes the text tool not working. It did for me.
On your Win XP system -- do you have Adobe Font Manager? If so, I believe that there is something that you can use in that program to find duplicate fonts. It's been so long since I've used a Windows PC that I can't remember. If you don't have any type of font manager on your system, there are several available. I know for a Mac the Font Explorer X is free and it's a good font management program. You'll have to google for your PC. I don't think you can do a manual search for duplicate fonts (looking in your system folders manually) since fonts tend to be spread out all over unless you're careful.
