Default transparent background for logo w/ image

recently had to auto trace/draw a logo which was not vector. after recreating the image and coloring accordingly, i added text above, below and within the graphic. i need to get the background of the document transparent. this is not for webpage, it is for graphic/logo which will be used for printing on paper and clothing. must be saved vector in order to enlarge at later point for banners. i have tried every conceivable thing i can think of, but still have no success in getting the background to be transparent. please help. thanks. -- susan (btw, i'm using illustrator 9)

Default Re: transparent background for logo w/ image

The background is transparent wherever nothing has been drawn or placed. If your original raster logo is still in the file, that is likely the source of your opaque areas. Either delete the logo of place it on its own layer, then set that layer to be a template.
