    Default Trapping issue

I need to trap a colour against some photos. The colour is 100% process black, with white text knocked out, so overprint won't work. It's a paragraph rule, allowing it to size and move with the text.

In QuarkXPress I had a custom colour with it's own trapping preferences (you can't manually control trapping for paragraph rules).

What I want is either a 1 pt. keepaway around the white text or a 1 pt choke where the rule meets the underlying photo.

InDesign traps based on color in the page, not on object, as QXP did it. Read that section of the user guide thoroughly. Also read the Print Guide pdf on the install disk of the InDesign CS software. Lots of new thinking to chew on. You might need to define a new, second black color that doesn't overprint.

    Hope this helps,.

    Scott:

How are you trapping the job? If it will be trapped with the RIP-manufacturer's proprietary software, you may have additional options. In a case like this, I'd probably define the paragraph rule as 99% K to force it to knock out, then let our Brisque RIP's FAF software handle the trap. You may wish to discuss this with your prepress techs.

It didn't really answer the question. I don't have a manual. The help files only address the feature of trapping, but don't offer any specifics.

What I need is a solution that will trap a black paragraph rule against a photograph, and I haven't found one yet. In QuarkXPress I was able to create a custome colour for this, and specify it's trapping against "Indeterminate" as -1 pt. Near as I can tell, the only control I have is to overprint the stroke. That's no good, as it won't provude a keep-away.

There really needs to be more information on trapping in InDesign.
