In both FreeHand and Illustrator you can set the "join" type of strokes
(how sharp corners look) to 3 settings: miter, round and bevel. It's
possible that FreeHand and Illustrator didn't interpret the join type of
your exported file correctly. I tested your PNG myself and exported to
AI 7 format from FWMX2004 with FreeHand compatibility checked and opened
the file in both FreeHand MXa and Illustrator CS (v11) and the stroke
looked OK to me as it was set to a round join. If that is not what you
see, in FreeHand MX, select the bird object and go to the Object panel
then select the stroke entry. You will see 3 buttons to set the join
type below. In AI, select the shape and go to the Stroke Panel to find
the same. I have no earlier version of FH installed to check how that
was set before MX.
In Fireworks, the only approximation you'll find to join types is a
choice between a square and a round stroke in the Shape tab of the
Advanced dialog of the Strokes Options dialog. That's pretty limited...
and a pain to get to...
