Truncate log while server is running - Microsoft SQL / MS SQL Server

Do you mean the error log or transaction log? You need to use BACKUP LOG to backup the log to a file outside SQL Server which can then be backed up to whether you want. -- Tony Rogerson SQL Server MVP http://www.sqlserverfaq.com?mbr=21 (Create your own groups, Forum, FAQ's and a ton more)...

Do you want to backup, or truncate? Backup is different than truncate!

Anyway, this command will backup the log for the database 'databasename'

BACKUP LOG databasename TO DISK = 'c:\databasenamelog.bak' WITH INIT

    You can do:

    BACKUP LOG db WITH NO_LOG

To reduce the size of the physical files, you can do :

    DBCC SHRINKFILE (logfile)
