Two Illustrator questions

Doug and Gloria, tried your suggestion, it opens fine, but I am not able to select anything but the whole image, which is not grouped. Guess I will just re-build it to what I need. I will try this on several other files to watch it work. --Thanks.

Gary may be correct. The PDF might contain a raster image, in which case you can't do anything with it except recreate the graphics.

a related question:
in previous versions of AI I could apply that to a dashed line to create
a series of shapes. That doesn't work anymore. Any tips?

If the pdf was created from Illustrator with "Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities" checked on, you should have no problem opening and editing the pdf. If the file was created by almost any other means that I know of it can cause all sorts of problems when Illustrator converts it back into an AI file.
