Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
I'm having the problem that type and logos set in Illustrator 10 and brought into a picture box in Quark 6 are rasterizing. All fonts are loaded and Quark recognizes artwork. I've tried saving artwork as Il 8, doesn't make a difference. Also tried bringing artwork into Quark 4.1 and 5.0 - same problem. Please help!

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
Is there transparency invovled in your artwork? Are you familiar with the Flattening process? Are you aware that Quark doesn't support transparency? And that files that you place into Quark must be flattened, and in the process, some art may become rasterized?

Mordy,
Thanks for replying. I'm not sure what you mean by transparency in this case. There is only one layer of art and it is opaque. And no, I'm not very familiar with flattening. However, I did go back to the artwork in Il10 and selected flatten artwork and resaved. This did not work. Am I missing a step? When I went back to it again it was as if the layer had not flattened. Does this work the same way as Photoshop? I'm better versed in Photoshop. Do I need to save as a copy? Can you help.

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
Are you spooling to a postscript device?
Is the font in good shape?
Does it spool correcty from Illustrator?
Are you using any 3rd party trapping application or InRip trapping?
Did you embed the font when saving?
Is the font pixelated or does it look "bolder" in areas?
Like Mordy asked, did you use any transparency in the AI file? Opacity, blending modes, dropshadows and so forth.
There is a difference between flattening layers and flattening transparency. If fact, you do NOT want to flatten transparency in Illustrator if you are using spot colors.

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
Hi John,
To answer your questions:
1. I am spooling to an Epson Stylus 1160 Ink Jet printer.
2. There are two fonts, both in good shape.
3. The file spools and prints correctly from Il 10.
4. I'm not sure what a 3rd party trapping application is. Can you give me more info on this ?
5. No, I did not embed the fonts when saving. What does this do?
6. The fonts do not look pixelated or bolder in Il 10, only when placed into the picture box in Quark.
7. There is one line of copy, "28th Annual", which is then repeated beneath to act as a drop shadow which then overlaps a third line of copy.
I also discovered if I open this file in Photoshop and save as a tif and then import into Quark it reads correctly in Quark, but I know this should not be necessary. Do you have any more suggestions? Please help. Thanks!

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
I am unfamilliar with that printer but I assume that it is NOT a postscript device. (I am unfamilliar with most inkjets)
Since you are using version 6, select the placed eps image and turn on full resolution in preview resolution. (right click or control+click or item>preview resolution>full resolution)
Eps images need to print to postscript devices or else the screen preview of the eps is only imaged. Turning on full resolution will give you a better output of the screen preview because the screen preview is better.
You do need to embed fonts though when saving the Illustrator eps file. (check embed fonts in the second save for eps dialog window)
You can also print to a pdf, (or export to pdf when targeting a postscript device) and print from Acrobat to your printer.
You can also get a software rip. My faded memory is kicking in but there is a "free" one by the name of ghostprint or something along the lines. I have never used it but other say that it works well. I am not remembering the name correctly though but will post back if it comes to me. Others do know the name so I hope they visit this thread.

It was Ghostscript that I was thinking of.
You can find it here. <http://www.ghostscript.com/doc/gnu/index.htm>
You will need to verify that your printer is supported.

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
Like John says, you will need a RIP software to print from Quark to your Epson printer otherwise your Illustrator art will print low resolution.
Epson sells that software called StylusRIP for about $150 (Canadian) I think, but it's not OSX ready yet. Therefore it will work only if you re-boot in OX9 and only with Quark 4 or 5.
You can print your logo from Illustrator to your Epson printer and it will print fine; but Quark is a different story, it needs a RIP software.

Re: Type and logos set in Il10 rasterizing when brought into Quark 6
I'm having the problem that type and logos set in Illustrator 10 and brought
into a picture box in Quark 6 are rasterizing.
By the way, it will be normal for your logo to look "rasterized" on the screen, in Quark (it's only low resolution representation that you see there). If you print it to a postscript Printer it will print OK.

Of course, InDesign can print EPS at full resolution to non PostScript printers just fine.... :)
