    Default Type Issues in CS

    I am having two (possibly related) issues with type in Illustrator CS. The easiest way to explain would be to direct you toward the following links:

    <http://www.zen33411.zen.co.uk/ParenthesesProblem.gif>
    <http://www.zen33411.zen.co.uk/TabProblem.gif>

    In the first problem, I am using OpenType fonts to set Greek text. Curiously, at random points, things like brackets, commas and full points (periods) will either hang at the ends of sentances or wrap to the next line. In the example you can see a bracket hanging at the end of a line. I should point out that there is NO space between this bracket and the following word yet the bracket has NOT wrapped to the next line. I have tested this with various other fonts, OpenType and otherwise so I am not convinced that it is a font issue.

    In the second problem, the text is set to Left Justify.. The statement 'Net Weight 1.5kg' is supposed to be (right align) tabbed to the limit of the text box yet it places the small gap you see in the example. There is no space after the 'g'. I took the actual width of the text box and placed this in the tab setting s and this is how it appeared. When I have done this in previous versions of Illustrator I have had no problems of this sort.

    Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance.

    Default Re: Type Issues in CS

    My guess with the first problem appears to be an issue with the text box not being set to Greek text. Illustrator doesn't know where to break text properly if it doesn't recognize the language. Select your text box, click the Character Palette, click the arrow to show multilingual options. After "Language:" select Greek (assuming you have the Greek "language dictionary" installed).

    With the second problem, I have had issues with AI tabbing over to the right many times in the past (with many grey hairs to prove it, but have never figured it out myself. My suggestion is to use InDesign if you want more control over your text.

    I typed out a text block using several Open Type fonts, using lots of punctuation and parentheses, and I could not get it to brak aline incorrectly. On the second problem, I set up a left-justified paragraph, with a final couple of words tabbed with a flush-right tab dragged over to the right edge of the type box - and the type goes right to the edge. Am I doing something you’re not?

    I am curious if you have greek selected in the International Preference Pane and if you have it selected in the character palette and if you have Roman Hanging Punctuation selected in the paragraph palette and paragraph styles?
