Type selection difficulty
Working in CS, but have had this problem with 8 and 9, on mac and PC - sometimes, out of the blue, when i double click on a body of type, to edit it, it will not select the type and insert a cursor. i cannot drag and highlight, etc. i must be inadvertently changing some option, but i don;t know what the heck it is. any ideas...?

Re: Type selection difficulty
Harron:
it is not locked as i can still select the body of copy which puts the usual box around it. i can grab the body and treat it as any other object.
here is the interesting bit - when i double click within the copy as i normally would, (which would insert a cursor or highlight text) no cursor shows up but when i type anything it does show up.
Also - now i know this is a setting issue i am lost on - when i use any selection tool, open arrow, closed arrow etc on any shape or object, none of the points or paths show up...

Re: Type selection difficulty
Sorry, Jason. Beats me.
We're not talking about an export to legacy version issue, are we?
I don't have CS (I'm at 10), but I jumped in because you said you had these same issues in 8 and 9.
Also - now i know this is a setting issue i am lost on - when i use any
selection tool, open arrow, closed arrow etc on any shape or object, none
of the points or paths show up...
Try toggling Hide Edges (Ctrl+H). That just might be the whole thing.

Edit - HA! I see I was superfluous once again.

Re: Type selection difficulty
Jason,
You are creating another (new) text instance because the 'baseline' of the
text tool cursor was not in line with the baseline of the text you were
trying to edit. That's all. When that is about to happen you will see a
light dotted outline around the text-tool cursor. When you are really over
the existing text baseline, that dotted outline disappears.

Yup. One day, Illustrator will get savable workspaces à la Photoshop. It would be a great boon, considering how often deleting prefs seems to be the solution to an ever-increasing number of problems.
(Might want to save a copy of your prefs files just in case...)
