Type/text stroke weight
Whenever I open a new text box and put in copy the type always has a stoke weight on it of 1pt that I have to get rid of by Selecting All and then change the stroke weight to 0.
Can I set a preference so that the weight is 0 when I open a text box and input copy?

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Launch InDesign, but do not open any document. Set the type with no stroke. That's done.

Jean-Marc,
Thank you for clarifying that. In spite of what Dave may think, it was not clear to me, which is why I asked.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
In the character palette, on the Type menu, in the Paragraph Styles palette, in the Character Styles palette. In the absence of a document, you won't be able to use the Control palette to adjust type characteristics, but when you're working with a document's live text you will be able to.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Sorry you guys have lost me.
Dave
Do you mean:
In the character palette, OR on the Type menu, OR in the Paragraph Styles palette, OR in the Character Styles palette.
If so, I see no means to zero the Stroke Weight in any of the above except in the Stroke Palette - which I know - but this doesn't seem to answer my question -
namely - to not have Stroke Weight when I open a text box. Does one really have to select zero stroke weight every time one opens a text box?
Totally lost

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Ah, sorry, I failed to notice that you have a stroke weight problem because I was too busy answering specific questions when I should have read the topic subject.
With your document open but nothing selected, in the Stroke palette click the little T that separates Text settings from Container settings. Now click the Stroke icon to bring it to the front of the fill icon.
Now switch the swatch to None.
Now check the same setting with no document open. It sounds as though you have it set as an application default.
There is still the possibility that you have a stroke switched on the in Paragraph Styles and/or Character Styles palettes for the default styles you're using, so check there too if the above isn't enough.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Hi Dave
A nights sleep did not work any wonders.
In the Stroke Palette I could only find a little T under Color. Is that the little T I should click?
The only other little T is In the Palette: Paragraph Styles/Character Styles/Swatch - under Swatch!!!
I tried little T in Swatch but ended up in a total quagmire of boxes with red “no entry” signs and could only type blank spaces
Is there a default to make take the app back to its pristine/virgin out of the box condition?
Still at sea
cheers

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Steve,
You could dump your preferences, but that will not reset individual saved document defaults.

Don't understand this at all, but choose your text tool without anything selected in your document and from the swatches pallet choose the little "T" at the top and then make sure the stroke box is selected and choose the "none" option at the top of the swatches. The stroke box should then have a red slash through it. You can also do this with a textbox selected and it will change all the type in the textbox (as long as it is not part of a threaded story) without having to select the text.
But like Dave said, if you have a paragraph style with a stroke as your default style, it will appear again as soon as you start typing.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
I don't think I'll have any trouble from para style as I have not reached that level of sophistication in InDesign : )
At the moment I'm held up from getting into InDesign because Adobe is downloading I of 2 files - AWEXFILES>TXT, which I can't cancel because of the spinning beachball from hell and if I Force Quit and try InDesign again I get the BB from hell. I've had this before and I now remember why I cancelled all downloads fropm Adobe.
I shall open InDesign and leave it to do its own thing and come back refreshed and ready to go after the cup that cheers.
Thanks Diane

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Dave fixed my AWEXfiles prob - go off line open InDesign and select NEVER darken my doorstep again.
But
I followed the instructions
Open InDesign:
Swatch palette shows “NONE” with a red slash thru it
The two little boxes above it show a clear box on the left superimposed on a box with T in it.
The stroke palette shows weight 1pt
I now Got to File- New Doc click OK.
The Swatch Palette shows “NONE” with a red slash thru it
Now the left of the two little boxes above it shows a red diagonal as does the right box but without a T in it
The Stroke Palette shows weight empty - no zero.
I select the text icon
New doc
Draw a text box
Swatch shows both little above “NONE” without red diagonals but the right little box shows an outlined T
Stroke Palette 0 weight shows 1pt
When I type some text it shows the text outlined.
I select the type and when I alter the weight to zero the text disappears and when I type nothing shows.
When I select a weight of 1pt and type still nothing shows and the Swatches little boxes are empty.
Further un recorded fiddling gave me a little right hand box with a question mark in it.
So I'm left with a text box that either writes text with weight or invisible text.
Come back QxP all is forgiven. - even your vvv heavy price.
cheers

Re: Type/text stroke weight
Steve,
It sounds to me that you are confusing the fill color with the stroke color of your text. The two overlapping icons in the Swatches palette let you manage the fill color and the stroke color. It sounds as though you have the stroke color at the front which is rarely needed for text. That's the root of your confusion.
Leave the stroke color at None and bring the fill color icon to the front. Now color your text.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
And to make sure you understand how you select between them--you click on either box to bring it to the front. The little boxes to the side with the square and the T are the boxes you use to determine whether you are applying color to the box (graphic, frame or textbox) or the text (which you can only select when you have a text or a textbox selected). Your little outlined T is where the command for coloring a stroke is. The weight of a stroke doesn't matter, if you are adding color to a stroke, ID makes the assumption that you want a stroke and defaults a weight of 1 pt. Remove the color and there is no stroke. But if you have no color on the fill box, then your text will disappear. If you want to swap colors between the stroke and fill, you can click on the little two headed arrow at the corners of the stroke and fill boxes. These same two boxes appear in the tool pallet and you can select and change their colors from there as well.

Re: Type/text stroke weight
I have absolutely no idea how I have managed it but I seem to be able to open a text box click the overlapping boxes until I get one with a T in it clack black and I have type without a stroke overlay.
The various suggestions given have given me a very hazy idea of what I am doing - but it is magic and not science that I am playing with.
I have had ID for a long time - I bought ID when it came on the market at a huge discount - an offer I couldn't refuse. However, at the time, I was teaching graphics using QxP, but I couldn't afford it so I bought ID, for a rainy day - that was eightish years ago ( just after I retired) and ID has sat there first as 1.5 then the upgrade to 2.0. I had a lot, and still do have a lot, of projects on the go - Getting to grips with ID has not been one of them until now. The User manual has been no help nor has Help. The best help is the very kind support by such as your good selves. It does feel like an imposition asking for help as most of you are obviously professionals, but still I ask and I thank for the help given.
No doubt, the penny will drop if I keep fooling around with ID. I certainly miss the office where a shout brings a solution by demonstration. The college I worked at has QxP not ID - they can't even afford to upgrade to OS X - at least I'm ahead of their game.
So I thank you again for your very generously given time and help.
Night, night one and all
cheers
Steve
