and so many things are broken because of it. The puter halts for a second
or two sporadically, everything is slower, GTK apps (including Firefox) are
all broken (non-responsive, big black areas instead of window content),
about half of my packages were removed instead of upgraded, etc... I'm
looking at a fresh install... Dammit :'(

Mandr* I always did a fresh install, it saves having to sort out any
problems that might happen. Murphy always strikes when you least expect
him to!

software, drivers, etc, the upgrade works fine. If you used crappy
software like Automatix for installs, there's a BIG chance you'll have to
do some fixes afterwards. This is primarily Automatix's fault, not Ubuntu,
although you might expect the updater to be a bit more fool-proof.

personally prefer to do a clean install of the new software, after having
eliminated any trace of the older version.

the base system that's the problem, it's the KDE settings. I didn't
reinstall (at my parents' now, and their ADSL is too slow), I just moved
all my home folder contents to another folder, rebooted into KDE with a
clean slate, and now I'm copying over the bits and pieces that were
missing. Everything seems okay now, including a weird problem I had with
JPEGs. The system itself seems fine, but I would like to prepare anyone for
the possibility of having to fix some KDE issues at least.
I came from Mandr*, too! Debian on my server made me look for alternatives,
and I must say I don't regret switching to Kubuntu, even with these minor
setbacks. What made you change? The Mandrivas seemed to bring a good amount
of Microsoftness into the previously very fine and stable Mandrakes, IMO.
Just couldn't stand it anymore myself - too much hassle ;)
Cheers,
Daniel

can probably guess how long this Ubuntu installation has been around, and
each and every one of the moves higher has been dist-upgrade. Had a minor
bit of trouble with the new Xorg not adding HorizSync and VertRefresh
values and ending up in 640X480 for a desktop on Dapper, but had no
problems other than that. The Ubuntu install has been on /dev/hda7 for
nearly two years now.

and I started to want apps (especially multimedia for playing DVDs) that
were not available for OS/2. Mandr* is/was a great distro for noobs to
get their feet wet and at first I liked KDE but I started to appreciate
Gnome's "less is more" approach and switched DEs. Mandr*'s Gnome is at
least one step behind the current version and if they do produce an
upgrade for their current release they only make it available for club
members, that's blackmail in my book. I didn't like their 2006 release
much so looked around for current Gnome-based alternatives so switched to
Breezy, then took a look at FC5 when it came out and promised myself I'd
come back to Ubuntu when Dapper was released. So far I'm happy with it.
Haven't had an MS 'OS' on my PC since 1994 :-)
