Default Ubuntu can't recognize primary HDD

    Hi...

New to this forum and to Ubuntu. I downloaded it to try to use the Live cd
to boot up my crashed Dell Dimension 4550 (which suffered from a BSOD caused
by IRQ_NOT_EQUAL etc.). I wanted to go in and copy many of my data files
from the crashed computer HDD to an external drive I have attached to that
computer. However, while Ubuntu recognizes the external (USB) drive, it does
    not recognize the internal HDD.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong (maybe boot sequence?) and also
whether if it finally DOES see my HDD will it let me copy and paste from
that to the USB external drive?

Running Windows XP Home. 512 MB RAM.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Gail,
how have you verified that it doesn't see your hard disk? Try looking for
it with the Disks manager under Administration tools. If it's there,
through that you can enable it and copy the files off to your USB drive
also. Use the browse button to make a new folder under /mnt/(possibly
/mnt/XP) and then be sure to 'Enable' it before closing the app.

I know this is probably stating the obvious, but maybe the main HDD has
given up the ghost completely, try it in the usb case or as a slave.
Mine when it went faulty last week, wouldn't boot up, though when swapped
over with an old drive with a complete OS, and put on the 2nd ide, it is
recognised and I can copy and save from it. and I have a third ide drive as
a usb drive and they are all working in perfect harmony.
Though still don't know why the the original drive won't boot... oh
    well..........warranty forms here we come.

    HI ...

The Disk Manager sees the drive -- but says it is inaccessible. What now?

    TIA

That's OK. It's inaccessible because it has not been given a mount point
    or mounted.

Just click on the Browse or Change button next to Access Path and browse
to the some location you will remember such as the /mnt folder. Create a
new folder called XP. Then click "Open" which will select it. Then click
"Enable" in the Disk management dialog and it should open a window with
    the disk visible in nautilus.

Moving a lot of files using a live cd can be slow so you will need some
patience but I've used this several times and it seems to work well.

    Hi...

My Dell Dimension 4550 (about 3 years old) w/ 512 MB RAM gave me a BSOD for
an IRQ_NOT_EQUAL etc. error over the weekend.

I downloaded Ubutu because someone told me I could use the Linux Live CD to
retrieve files from the internal HDD and save them on my external USB HDD.

UBUTU recognizes the USB drive w/ no problem but does not see the internal
HDD. I wrote this query to the newsgroup and got a reply to search for the
drive through Disk Manager, Make a new folder for it in \mnt\ and enable the
drive. Well I did that and nothing happened. So I changed the path to the
one the USB drive uses and now the internal drive shows up there but says I
don't have permissions to access it.

It's one of those so-close-and-yet-so-far-away situations it seems. Please
tell me how I can do this simple task and get on w/ reformatting my drive
and reinstalling Win XP (and probably Ubutu's Linux also!)

    Thanks so much in advance!

    Hi...
Followed your instructions and voila! there's the drive. HOWEVER ... it says
I don't have proper permissions to open it -- and the other drive says I'm
not authorizsed to write to it -- or to change anything.

Alas. My patience is wearing thin. Perhaps the thing to do is bit the bullet
and call Dell or Microsoft for $100 and have their techs walk me through
this -- but I'd like to be sure I've given it the good college try. Can you
tell me how to assign a user supervisor password (or even where to go to
look for such things) and/or how to set permissions.

    Many many thanks in advance...Gail

Even if I never tget ubuntu to work I LOVE the screensavers!!

If the USB drive is formatted with NTFS you won't be able to write to it
using the Live CD. As far as reading the drive is concerned, you could
try opening nautilus as the user root. That should give you permission to
read anything the system can read.

You might just try using another windows machine to copy them. Example a
budy with a large hardrive could plug it into his computer as a slave
drive and copy the file to his own drive. After this just reinstall the
Windows OS and go back to the buddy and get the file back. Or the you
could plug both harddrves into the second computer and copy from one to
    the other.

You might be able to reinstall the os into the usb drive. I don't know
if windows allows it though. Windows should be able to backup the data
itself. You will need to change your bios to boot from usb if is
capable. I would not suggest this.

If you give up on backing up the data first you could try:
reinstall the windows os on the computer over the current install,
leaving the current data. This could be dangerious.

Linux can back up data for you if windows can but it maybe more
    diffucult due to harddrive formats.

Have you tried to boot with f8 in safe mode?
Does the windows oss boot at all?

Realy I am not a pro but I am trying to help.
