Ubuntu ZIP help requested
I've been using Ubuntu for a few months now and am happy with the
results.
I recently had the need to view a ZIP disk (100M). I know the ZIP drive
works as it works when I'm running Windoz.
I inserted the ZIP disk and when I tried to open it, I got an error
message.
The mount error was: Unable to mount the selected volume.
and the detail was:
Error: could not execute pmount.
Any suggestions as to what I should do to enable mounting of the ZIP
drive?

that among the all the little-*nix-horrors noone strikes more terror in
usrland than PERMISSIONS.
As my applications are worth far more than the OS+hardware, and my box is
locally insured by S&W, and I am a single self-admining (HA!) lusr ...
because of all that why-oh-why does the OS presume to tell me which
programs I may run?
PERMISSIONS are a sorry miscreant leftover from a mainframe GURU era that
died with Apple-2+. Time to murder-those-darlings ...

that the reason for the failure? How do I change the permissions?
As you might be able to tell, I am not a Linux expert.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?
Do you have backports repositories enabled in /etc/apt/sources.list?
pmount has been updated but the update is in backports. There is a
backports wiki at: http://backports.ubuntuforums.org/wiki/

you need permissions to prevent a user from reading files of an other user
on the system. It is also not funny if a normal user can manipulate the
system or even rm -Rf /

I care not-one-wit for multi-usr systems, their defenders or their
weaknesses. When $100/Meg RAM and $2000 CPUs ruled , one might have felt
some sympathy ... no longer. As I observed that issue has not really
existed since Apple-2+ ( or the 68000 workstations ). Those trapped in a
nostalgic bytewise afterglow are welcome to their fantasy.
For the rest of us - say 98% of serious computer users - the only issues
are caustic speed and ruthless transparency of a single user calculation
appliance.
you did ask ...

notified me of updates.
I have no idea what a backports repository is????
I've been telling my son, who is a computer engineer and deep into
Linux, that Linux is still not ready for prime time.
BTW, he lives several states away so he is no help in solving my
problem. As he makes his living doing software projects, he is has
little interest in "working" on this stuff after hours.
For example, I got a copy of the NIH imageJ program for Linux. I have to
install it. So far I haven't been able to do it. The Mac version I use
was a snap to install.

to change the permissions on the program, file or directory, type the
following:
sudo chmod a+rwx {name of file or dir}
Hope that helps...
