Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
I’m not sure where to ask this, so I’ll start here. I'm using OS X (104.8) and I have a one page Quark 7.01 document that I need to create an X-1a PDF of. I created a PS file using X-1a verification in Quark. I attempted to distill it using Acrobat Professional 8.0 (using the default settings for PDF/X-1a:2001), but I am unable to get a PDF and the log returns the following:
<PDFX ISO="15930-1:2001" COMPLIANT="false">
PDF/X Compliance Report

[Violation] Current settings prohibited font embedding on the following pages:
Page 1, Occurrences: 8
Violations: The total found in this section was 8.
2. Summary
Warnings: The total found in this document was 0.
Violations: The total found in this document was 8.
This document does not pass PDF/X-1a:2001 compliance checks.
</PDFX>
%%[ Warning: Did not pass PDF/X compliance tests.. No PDF file produced. ] %%
Distill Time: 66 seconds (00:01:06)
* *** End of Job ****
What do these font errors mean exactly? And how can I fix them? There are 8 fonts in the documents (6 helvetica, palatino and wingdings). Is this a licensing problem? I did some research and I think I’d get a font restriction if that were the case. I was able to get an X-1a PDF of a similar file also using Helvetica fonts, but I can’t figure this one out. I also created a press quality PDF and attempted to preflight profile convert it to a PDF/X-1a PDF, but that also failed.
Any assistance would be great. I’m new to creating X-1a PDFs and this has got me stumped.
Thanks,
Heather

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
Try this, go to your Quark preferences/ PDF/ Create postscript file for later distilling. Then to make your postscript, File/ Export/ Layout as PDF (will actually make .ps)/ Options (at bottom of window) verification- PDFX1a. That should distill OK.

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
Thanks for the reply! Actually, I always create a PS file out of Quark and then distill it separately. I’ve read that PDF files created directly out of Quark are prone to having problems, so I’ve been creating PS files. Most of my PS files distill fine, but I’m having problems with these four particular files.
Thanks,
Heather

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
You might have to backtrack a little here (the error does seem very odd
indeed) - try my guide as a starting point (made for Windows but almost
the same for OSX) ..

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
Do you have an .eps or PDF placed in Quark? If so, re-save them with embedded fonts or convert to outlines. Try collect for output, and save the fonts to a new folder, then load only those fonts and try again. Sounds to me like a font conflict. I would also clean out my fonts (Font Cache Cleaner).

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
Thanks for the link Jon. I followed it, but when I got to step 17 I don’t have a properties button, just a page setup and printer button–neither of which allow me get to Adobe PDF document properties.
Luke–I do have several eps files inside my Quark document, but all fonts are outlined already. Actually, the same eps files show up fine in other X-1a PDFs, so I don’t think that’s the problem.
Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: Unable to create X-1a PDF due to font violation
Heather - don't give up - just pretend you're on a Mac - hit PRINTER and
then SAVE PDF AS POSTSCRIPT and drop onto Distiller with the PDF/X-1a
setting ..
