unable to login fully using gnome - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

hi i installed redhat 7.3 last week and all went to plan. i have been logging in using gnome both as root and myself and again no issues. i rebooted the server today and the gnome gui login screen appears - i log in and then i get the mouse pointer on the screen. the mouse still moves. but i don't get the gui screen. i can still drop out to a terminal screen. can anyone tell me why this has happened or how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. thanks allison...

.... get out of the xfree server runlevel and manually:
    mtoblerstimpy:~> startx

does it work? no? check the log file: /var/log/XFree86.0.log
