A PostScript RIP should handle ASCII85 without any problems -- the PostScript contains the decoding algorithm.
If your RIP can't handle it, then it is probably trying to read the image data without parsing the PostScript correctly (let me guess: Scitex?).
The advantage is that the data is smaller and should go to the RIP faster.
But broken RIPs will cause problems for any data format.
