Default Unix Backup Software Recomendations? (BudTool)

I have been using an old version of BudTool to do unix backups. I
love budtool because it will create tapes using native unix commands
(tar, ufsdump, cpio, etc.) and does not need any client-side software.
It also uses simple, small, databases to store your backup history.

It seems that all backup applications available now are designed as
enterprise solutions with propriatary tape formats. Is there a vendor
out there selling a backup solution comparable to the old budtool
application? I will only be backing up 8 to 10 solaris hosts.

Why couldn't they let budtool live.... any other budtool fans out
there?

It's a wonderful tool, for these reasons.

Take a look at Amanda - http://www.amanda.org/ - open source, free,
production-ready, and yes, you can buy commercial support contracts
for it in case you have a manager who insists on such things.

You bet, but it's been so long I don't remember even what major rev
I was using. It's not around because PDC was bought out, not because
it wasn't good. When a company gets bought by someone else with the
same product, chances aren't good for that application. Ah well.
Give amanda a look-see and, er, see what you see.

Thanks Dave! I'll take a look at amanda, it seems that it will be a
good fit for what I need. I guess I'll have to give up my dream of
them reviving BudTool.

Also have a look at Lone-Tar for unix. It is a commercial app with all the
bells & whistles but
writes in a standard unix tar format. www.lone-tar.com

tar them up, encrypt them, and post them to Usenet. If you need them
back, go to Deja.
