unknown format

A large (150+ mgb) Illustrator EPS file cannot be reopened after being closed for an hour or two. The alert: " '__' is an unknown format and cannot be opened. Does anyone have any experience, advice, ...tissues?

Were you saving over a network? In the future, don't.

Make sure the file has the correct extension. (.eps if it's really an eps.)

See if you can import it into Quark or Indesign to find out if the file is actually corrupt.

I'll offer some tissues.

But also try to place the file into a new AI document. Don't have the file opened or it wont let you.

What version AI and OS?

Yeah, it was over a network to a server. AI-10, OS-10.2.8
I guess I'll start saving a copy to the desktop.

I did attempt to place in a new AI doc but I didn't try the INDD approach, I've already re-done a lot of the work but I'll see for future reference.
