Unlocking areas of a site....
Well I will give a little history first. I have just been hired into a new job
and have been handed a huge intanet site with ovwe 2000 pages. The past
designer/deleoper who has been gone for over a year now did some weird stuff to
the site. He has made some areas locked or uneditable and I can't seem to
figure out how to open these areas up so I can make changes to the links. Here
is a snip-it of code that is open then closed.
#BeginEditable "TopBanner" --><img src="images/banners/mainsectionbanner.jpg"
width="454" height="73"><!-- #EndEditable -->
I am more of a designer than a programmer so I don't know all the ins and outs
of the code. an anyone help me in opening up this site so I can make the needed
changes to the links.
Thanks

Re: Unlocking areas of a site....
Hmm, im assuming that was done with deamweaver... if so, go to
Modify>templates
And edit the original template and remove or add editable fields then apply
the changes to the rest ofthe site. Have a look at the dreamwaever template
tutorial, its not that big!

Re: Unlocking areas of a site....
You are in for a rough ride, then. I suggest you hire a sub to get you
going on this without making a complete mess of things.
That region is a template editable region. It implies that the site's
content is being 'managed' by templates, probably from a previous
installation of Dreamweaver4 or Ultradev4, but also possibly by FrontPage
<shudder>.
A template editable region is a part of the code that will ALWAYS be
editable in all child pages. Parts of the code that are OUTSIDE of these
regions are only editable in the parent template page, and when changes are
made to these regions in the parent template page, they propagate to all
child pages. Parts of the code that are INSIDE such regions are editable in
the child pages, and changes made to those regions (either in the template
or in the child pages) will NOT propagate to all other child pages.
Does that help?

Well taht sucks! My team was talking about redoing the site cause they have
never been able to unlock those areas and the person who designed it has been

Re: Unlocking areas of a site....
What version of DW are you using? What version are your team members using?
If this code is representative of the code throughout your site, recreating
the templates may be a pretty easy thing to do. But tell me, do you not have
a folder called "Templates" in your local site?

Re: Unlocking areas of a site....
We all are using MX but I don't know what version it was created in. As for the
Templates folder... there is one but it does not have anything in it thats
worth a darn... I can't find anything that looks like the Home Page Temp. I
might have to do some searching around and see if any of the upper programmers
have the original templates on there HD. This site is gona be a big project for
me from what I can tell!

Re: Unlocking areas of a site....
The templates were created in an earlier version of DW than DMX (did you
mean DMX or DMX2004?).
If everyone is using DMX or DMX2004, then you will be safe to recreate the
templates.
The process for recreating the templates will be pretty straightforward.
Next we would need to know how many are to be recreated.
Can you do a sitewide search for "dwt" and tell me how many unique template
names you find, please?
