While attempting to place a backup tape image of an F30 to a P610, the message:

    unrecognized Client Program format

is displayed after which the system boots normally from hard disk.

I bet you're missing p610 drivers from your mksysb image from the F30
environment. You'll need to either install the p610 drivers on the F30 then
redo the mksysb or install the p610 drivers from the AIX installation CD.

I think the F30 is a RSPC machine and the p610 is a CHRP machine, so they
are somewhat different, and definitely has different internal hardware.
Hence the need to install additional p610 and CHRP-specific drivers.

Or boot from the AIX install CD and use the system recovery option.

That may have worked ... but as it turns out, the backup tape from the
F30 we were using, was not allowing the P610 to boot from that tape.
We created a boot tape using the P610, booted from it and then
continued with the restore process using the backup tape from the F30!

    Problem solved!

    Thanks for the suggestions.
