upgrading from 4.0.18 to 5.0.20 ? - MySQL

Hi there, I am currently running a mysql 4.0.18 installation on a production server. Now I would like to update the version to catch up with security fixes. On the MySQL site it made the impression to me that 5.0 is ready for pruduction use. But what benefits does it do for me instead relying on a 4.0, 4.1 installation? I fear that my webapp might brake in some points. Is 5.0 significantly faster, or more secure? Thank you for any hints, Merlin...

You should update to either 4.1.20 (http://lists.mysql.com/announce/364)
or 5.0.22 (http://lists.mysql.com/announce/365) due to a serious bug
    that has been fixed recently.
