Re: UPGRADING TO ILLUSTRATOR CS?
Thanks for your input!
So we just conducted an experiment here, (a co-worker brought in CS to try this out)...
We opened an AI 10 file in CS which had embedded EPS' (complete with clipping paths), then exported it as an AI 8 file.....
then opened that 8 file in Illustrator 9 (we don't have 8 here), and it was fine! We could even edit the text!
So maybe we WILL upgrade now.....

Re: UPGRADING TO ILLUSTRATOR CS?
I’m glad this workflow works for you. But you should look closely at the type in the exported file. Single lines of point type will often convert intact, but longer lines, multiple lines, area type and any type with custom kerning applied will be broken apart. It can still be edited by cutting and pasting, but you need to pay close attention if the type in the exported legacy file is to be edited.
I have no problem with this, generally speaking. It’s the price of newer, more advanced technology until everyone is on the same page. My only real gripe is this: If I open a legacy file in AI CS, I’m immediately presented with the option of updtaing the type to the CS format, or not updating it - in which case the type appears in a box and is not editable. If I then export this file to a legacy format, I would expect the type to keep the state it was in BEFORE it went through CS, since it never saw the CS type engine.
