Used Contribute Once, now I cannot get rid of

I used Contribute when it first came out in conjunction with a website that had
been built with Dreamweaver. I decided not to continue with Contribute, but
for two year now I have been trying to get rid of the annoying messages that
the site is configured be shared using Contribute and that a certain user (my
username) has currently checked out the page I am trying to alter. Everything
works, it just thinks I am still using contribute. I have long removed it from
my hard drive and as many files as I know to remove from the site. I would be
very grateful if someone can explain a procedure to rid all references to
Contribute from my site and from Dreamweaver MX. TIA Henry

connect to the remote site with some ftp client (other than dreamweaver)

find a folder named _mm that contains a file named contribute.xml
Delete it.

now in this site def. in Dreamweaver, tab through it and turn off
checkin/checkout

now in dreamweaver, open the F8 site manager window.
connect.
right-click on the top level remote folder and choose "unlock"
