    Default useless firewalls

You have a choice--a computer that works or a room
decoration with a firewall. Most people I know keep them
    turned off.

    Ghee..i must be special.
I actually have a computer with a firewall activated that works.
Most people that I know use their firwall and still have a computer that works..versus one thats virus infected, hacked to death, spyware active and all those other nasties out there

after beginning to write and then delete several smart ass replies, I
    thought better of it.

Let me ask you a couple of questions. How are you connecting to the
internet? What type of firewall are you trying to use? What is it
preventing you from doing that you want your system to do? I run virus, ad
blocks, a firewall and spy prevention software plus use a router with a
firewall and NAT translation and there is nothing I want to do that I can't
do while blocking all popups, cookies, temp files, hacks (I hope) and
    viruses.

So provide the board with some information and there are probably some
really smart people here that can help you.
