Users comments on Coolpix 5400? - Photography

Hi, I know of another friend of mine who got a 5400 few weeks ago. Well basically most of the pictures that he got were soft and had lot of focussing issues. Indoor shots were underexposed by 1 or two stops. Eventually returned it yesterday. P "Dan Beaty" <net> wrote in message news:net... ...

Even my 10D's AWB makes erros, so i started to use manual awb- settings and
    it helps.
Even 10D's pictures are a bit soft, like every digicam's.
Manual focusing is a good solution.

Maybe Pramod's friend didn't find all proper settings.
How can he take a working cam back? Call the deal off?

I have a 5400 and while I agree that these points could be better, they are
not really that bad. I found that. the camera frequently sets exposure times
to 1/2 or 1 in moderate light conditions which almost always looks bad when
shot just holding the camera. You might want to try using a tripod or
flash. I didn't have a bad picutre yet while using the flash.

The main problem is a slow lens. Why can't Nikon make a sub $1000
digital camera that has a lens that is f2.8 or faster throughout the entire
    zoom range?

Their are many things I like about this camera and the other Coolpix models. I
also am willing to learn ways to fine tune the camera to maximize results. But one
thing that surprised me was that basic automatic flash shots of interiors had
    better color on my 880.

What about the 5000? It lens has less range on the telephoto end, but what of
comments that it takes sharper photos than the 5400 at wide angle?

Prices for factory refurbished/discontinued 5000's are falling below $500US on
Ebay now. Is that a good deal? Having not worked with it, I don't know about what
people say that is is more of a hassle to use than the 5400.
