Using Actinic w Dreamweaver?

Ask a Question related to Macromedia Dreamweaver, Design and Development.

Default Using Actinic w Dreamweaver?

Any feedback on using Actinic with Dreamweaver MX? Curious how easy it
is to design a very customized template, use with Quickbooks, add new
site features, manage content and orders.

Not interested in open source options, custom programming, hosted
option, etc. Just hoping to hear from those who've used Actinic Business
or Developer edition.

Thx

I took a look at Actinic a long time ago. Thought it was an interesting
hybrid business model unique to the realm of ideas during the 'dot com
era' but decided it was a paint-by-number 'solution' because it functioned
as a black box and could not be modified or integrated.

Obviously things may have changed. Just what is a "Developer's Edition"
if there is no source code to work with? Or is there?

Actinic Developer is the version that allows use for multiple sites,
includes Dreamweaver extensions, and is supposedly aimed more toward
"site developers" rather than "store owners". I'm not sure about working
with the source code. Not something I would be at all capable of, so
didn't ask. Maybe I should, tho.

I know that no product will be perfect, but am curious if ANYONE is
happy using Actinic with Dreamweaver, and if so, what the pros/cons are
in their opinion.

I've not used Actinic. But I can imagine that the cons are the same for most
OOTB solutions. Mainly, they are a pain to customise. Apart from changing a
few colours and images here and there. Most people on this group are
developers and probably wouldn't use that kind of solution. However, if
you're doing a one-off store that follows their template then go for it. I
don't know for sure, but I can imagine that the Dreamweaver integration
relates to the look and feel rather than functionality.

Have no idea about Actinic, but you write as if you have no programming
experience,
so I am going to do a shameless plug just in case you are interested.

Have a look at http://www.yourvirtualstore.net
Yes, an out of the box solution, can be customised using DWMX and adapted to
your needs.
Content management system included and does all the other things you asked
about. I know that there has been a recent modification by an Aussie
company so that it integrates with Quickbooks. If you check the forum on
the site, and search for Quickbooks, you will see the thread I am talking
about.

Not sure if this helps you at all though :)

It would seem to me that it would be a benefit if Dreamweaver
extensions were to be used to modify look and feel of Actinic. Any
solution for that matter as extensions fall short of integration with
other applications do they not?

Al,

Cam saw a yvstore demo site I did using MM1 and he liked it so much he
purchased MM1 and developed his new site with it . Works really well
doesn't it? I think you would be surprised how many of your design packs
are being used with YVStore.....

FYI - I have used PA, MM1 and MM2 with YVStore as the backend to see how
well they integrate. Either as an online store or just a dynamic site -
because of the content management system that is included. I am the first
to admit I am no programmer :)

Your design packs and YStore work very well together - would take a little
work for a newbie admittedly, but is definitely doable - that's the
versatility of YVStore - straight out of the box or integrate with any
design (yours included) :-D

Sure. I tend to be more concerned with the functionality rather than

Darn. Guess no one here has actually used Actinic.

Nadia, I just noticed your original reply about yourvirtualstore.net in
your followup. Not sure why, but don't see that reply in the thread.
You're quite right that I have no programming experience (I'm sure
that's really obvious LOL). I was hoping that more experienced,
technical types would have good input on tools for those of us who
trudge the lower clouds (ha).

I'll look at the YVstore details - looks interesting at first glance.
I'll probably be back posting Qs on it next. Ha.
