Default Using Contribute with DW

After reviewing the support areas and the forums for both Contribute and DW, I
confess I don't understand what I need to do and what I should buy in order to
set up clients to update content using Contribute.

I am currently using Dreamweaver MX (Mac). I have a client that would like to
use Contribute 3 (Win). Do I need to upgrade to Dreamweaver MX 2004? I've read
some postings that suggest I must also purchase my own copy of Contribute. Is
this true.

We've tried using a trial version of Contribute. It seemed to work fine except
that the client reported that her updates were getting overwritten
(Check-in/Out is enabled on the site).

Can anyone lay this out for me so that I know what to do and what to buy? I
would appreciate it very much.

Look at this thread under macromedia.contribute.connection_administration:
FIX" for Contribute 3 FTP connection problems

You must own a copy of Contribute to allow others to use it on your sites,
that is what I've found out. There are also some cross platform issues that
MAY be solved by

FIX" for Contribute 3 FTP connection problems

However, I am not sure that cross platform issues are addressed.
Many are complaining of connection/authorization issues and the problems are
widespread and common. Use at your own risk.

Hi Elliot,
Here's my take on it:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=290&thre
adid=966516

Like Jefferis mentions above, there have been reports of Win/Mac compatibility
problems, but I have no direct experience with that.

The other thing to watch out for, and this is most likely the cause of your
problem with overwriting of pages, is that Dreamweaver can be used with a
'local site' that you have downloaded to your computer. I wonder if you have a
copy of the whole site on your local machine, and then just update a page and
check it in. In doing so, Dreamweaver didn't realize that there was a newer
version on the server. (Contribute always fetches a new copy from the server
when someone wants to edit a page.) We have a Dreamweaver guru here, and to
deal with this issue, he does not use a 'local' copy of the website. He ftps
down a fresh copy of a page, edits it, and immediately ftps it back up to the
server. This way he stays sync-ed with anyone else editing the site. I'm not
a Dreamweaver user myself, so I confess I have no idea how the check out/in
process really works. Maybe someone else here can explain/correct me.
