Using "Find File" on MS Word 5.0 - Mac Applications & Software

I'm using MS Word 5.0 on a power Mac 7300/180 with OS 8.6. Recently I had to have my system completely rebuilt (partly, I think, because I had too many extensions): disk reformatted, OS reinstalled, a much smaller number of extensions, and my applications and doents replaced. Since then the MS Word "Find File" doesn't work. I've always liked this feature because it can search for a Word doc using any internal text, not just the file title. But now, although the Find File dialog box looks the same, the OK button is always dimmed and inactive. Any suggestions? I ...

Default Using "Find File" on MS Word 5.0

I'm using MS Word 5.0 on a power Mac 7300/180 with OS 8.6. Recently I had
to have my system completely rebuilt (partly, I think, because I had too
many extensions): disk reformatted, OS reinstalled, a much smaller number
of extensions, and my applications and doents replaced.

Since then the MS Word "Find File" doesn't work. I've always liked this
feature because it can search for a Word doc using any internal text, not
just the file title. But now, although the Find File dialog box looks the
same, the OK button is always dimmed and inactive.

Any suggestions? I still have the old extensions on another disk, but if
one of them is relevant, I don't know which one it is. I tried using
Tools/Commands to remove Find File from the menu and replace it, but that
didn't help.

Please respond to rstantonu.washington.edu.

Thanks for any help,
Bob Stanton

It's possible that your hd was reformatted as HFS Plus instead of the
older HFS. I seem to remember that Word's Find File won't work under HFS
Plus. (You should be able to find out if this is the case by selecting
th hd icon and doing 'get info'.)

Otherwise, look in your MS Word folder, in the Commands folder and check
that the Find File 'extension' is still there.

The above is absolutely true. In Word 5.x, the internal Find File will not
work with HFS+. But there are many other utilites which now do the things
the internal Find File did. Don't remember if the version of the system's
find file in 8.6 will, but experiment.
