Great link Jodi - I thought I'd read everything on Jay's site, but I missed that one.

Rob, if you are using an adjustment layer, and just want the effect of the adjustment on part of the background image then I think the best way is just to use the layer mask attached to the background layer - paint in black in the mask where you want the effect of the adjustment layer not to show. If you use grouping with an adjustment layer as the top layer it operates rather differently to using grouping on an image layer (it means that the adjustment layer will only affect the layers that it is grouped with, and not any others below).
