using the cast function - MySQL

I am trying to concatenate two columns from a table and I'm using the cast function to convert the date variable into a char, but I keep getting an error message.... is this the right syntax? select concat ( firstname, '''s birthday is: ', cast( birthday AS CHAR ) FROM family;...

    I am trying to concatenate two columns from a table and I'm using the cast
    function to convert the date variable into a char, but I keep getting an
    error message.... is this the right syntax?

    select concat ( firstname, '''s birthday is: ', cast( birthday
    AS CHAR ) FROM family;

    You don't need the cast, try
    select concat ( firstname, '''s birthday is: ', birthday) FROM family;
