First the preliminaries: Using Mac OS 10.3.9 & 10.4.8 as well as PC
running Windows XP. Illustrator CS2-both mac and windows. Acrobat 7 pro
on mac and Acrobat 7 on PC.
QuarkXpress 6.5. InDesign CS2.

Most of the previously mentioned data doesn't seem to matter since I
get similar problems no matter what I use.

Here's what I do: I get logos and artwork from customers. Normally I
place them in a Quark page with some other stuff and export or print to
..pdf. I send this .pdf to the customer for approval and then to the
printer to print their stuff.

Here's the problem: We've noticed that since going to Illustrator
CS and then CS2 that when a pdf is made from an illustrator eps
sometimes 4 point rectangles are changed to a 2 point stroked line.
Most often these rectangles are formerly type. So we don't have to
deal with font problems, we have the customer outline all type. The
stroke never quite matches the weight of the rest of the text so it
sticks out.

Also many times a stroked circle will convert to one colored circle on
top of another and distorted to where they look more like ellipses.

My first test was to see if it was Quark causing the problem. So I
opened the customer .eps in Illustrator CS2 and created a .pdf
directly. If you open the pdf you can notice on certain magnifications
that there's something not quite right with the "I"s. Open the
..pdf in Illustrator CS2 and select these "I"s and they are now two
point stroked lines.

I also tried creating a pdf from Indesign with similar results.

Another problem with the Quark pdf was the circle I mentioned before.
When viewed in or printed from Acrobat Reader, the circle was
distorted. If I opened the pdf in Illustrator CS2 the circle was fine.

Weird, huh?

Lastly I opened the original logo in CS2 and back saved it to
Illustator 9 with no options checked. Opened this in Illustrator 10 and
created a pdf. This pdf was fine. But if I opened it in Illustrator CS2
it would convert the lines like before.

Adobe has been no help.

I've figured a work around by opening the original eps and saving as
a .tif. and using this, but this requires extra work and files.

I'm kind of hoping someone will tell me it's a setting or check box
to change and all this will go away... but I'm not holding my breath.

Here's a link to a pdf of screengrabs I created to better show what
I'm talking about.
