Default Vectors changing to bitmaps! Can't figure out why

I am having an issue with my PDF files created with Adobe Acrobat. Chunks of my vertor files are converting into bitmaps. It seems like random squares within the PDF are just changing into chunky bitmaps. I can't figure out why this is happening. This began happening recently with Acrobat 5 so I updated to 6 but it is still happening! Is it Acrobat or my clunky old Adobe Illustrator 9 that is causing the problem? This aside it never used to be a problem at all. If anyone can make sense of this it would really be appreciated! I can't output anything and my PDFs are a complete mess.

Have you checked your Flattener settings?
The Flattener Presets should be on high not low - and you can edit it to suit yourself and make your own Preset. You determine how much stays as vector and how much Acrobat rasterizes into bitmaps.

Also, I have found it advisable to have a blank layer between an image and text. This stops Acrobat from rasterizing the text and causing squares around text etc.

When printing/exporting to PDF, check your flattener transparency setting is high or your personal preset.

See if that makes any difference.

Happens with transparency. If you print to PDF, transparency is
flattened by Illustrator (as it must be). If you have low resolutions
in Distiller, you very nasty results.
