I had the same problem & looked here for a solution. Surprisingly, I couldn't find the answer - so I monkeyed with the settings. This seemed method seems to work.

If you are using Version Que just for yourself, LOCALLY ONLY, you need to set the access to the following:
    -----------------------------------------------------------
First, Open Version Que Preferences from the icon in the little section at the bottom right hand corner of Windows.
Next Click the "Settings" Tab > find "Workspace Access" field > set drop down box to "This Workspace Is Private"
    ----------------------------------------------------------
This worked for me AFTER Version Que restarted itself & AFTER I shut down PhotoShop & restarted it.

Hope this solves any problem your having.

Another thing which can make Version Cue go [Offline] is if you're using a computer (e.g., my PowerBook) where you're switching between different networks.

I was using the Automatic setting for Location, a very cool feature of the PowerBook--where it can automatically switch between Ethernet, Airport and a Modem connection, depending on which is available. Everytime I'd move between two locations, it would show my project as [Offline]. Turning on and off Version Cue would reset it but it was a pain.

Then I found out that the Automatic feature confuses Version Cue about connecting. The solution was to set a separate location for each network I was on with only one port selected for each.

    Now there is no problem.

    Jais,

Thanks for your response. I tried your suggestion and I'm still having
problems. I'm now beginning to suspect memory, or lack of memory, as
the culprit. I only have 512mb of RAM and I notice that Version Cue is
allocated 128mb of the 512mb available. I also suspect that as I save
more versions, the VC file becomes large and demands more RAM than is
available. So if I decide to use VC in the future, I'm sure I'll want
to get more RAM as a possible solution to the problems I had in the past.

Interestingly, several of my VC files still show as "in use by me" when
it is just not so. I don't know, VC seems like such a great tool but
I'm just way too nervous about losing important work due to file
corruption. I wonder when Adobe will set up a forum specific to VC.
