Very slow print dialog window
The problem is when I select print from InDesign CS it takes 16 seconds for the print dialog window to appear, during that time the beach ball is spinning. It makes no difference if it is a file with lot of art or a new document with nothing in it. I am having the same problem printing from Illustrator but NOT Photoshop or Acrobat out of the creative suite.
I have another Mac that is the identical machine; Power Mac G4 733MHz, 1.25 GB Ram running OS10.4.3 with all the same software(different serial numbers) installed. I am NOT having this problem on the other machine. The print dialog box appears immediately on the other machine.
I have reinstalled InDesign and it made no difference, I have re-created the InDesign preference files ...no difference. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jane

Re: Very slow print dialog window
I have found the print dialog to be slow the very first time I hit print after restarting ID, but after the first time, all the subsequent times are pretty fast.
Do you shut your mac down @ night, or do you leave it running?

Re: Very slow print dialog window
Thanks for replying, Chris,
Most of our users log out at night and leave the Macs on for IT maintanence. We seldom shut them down since upgrading to OSX. I have thought of the idea that perhaps only the first print is slow. However, I've tried print after print and they're consistently slow. As I pointed out, this started happening ever since Tiger. Everything was fine under Panther. But then again, we were printing using AppleTalk in Panther. In Tiger, we're printing to shared printers using a print server (presumably OSX Server but could be Windows Server 2003). I just wonder if anyone having a similar setup has experienced this slow down.

Very slow print dialog window
I just trashed a few hundred printer PPDs (In the Library under Printers) and reduced the wait time from more than two minutes to about five seconds!
