You should be able to feed the output directly from the VHS player's audio
output to the Mac's sound input port (mic jack), with a help of a
Y-adapter that connects two RCA plugs to one stereo mini-mic plug. No
amplifier necessary (in fact the amp's output could overload the Mac's
sound input port if you're not careful). I've done exactly this, to dub a
batch of two-hour concert broadcasts from VHS audio to CD. (two-CD sets,
    to be more precise)

Under Mac OS 8.something, I used the freeware Coaster app to record the
input to AIFF files that I then edited and marked tracks with Peak LE and
burned to CD using Toast. I don't know what the equivalent sequence would
be under OS X. I'm interested in finding out, though, because I just
ordered a new Mac and will be switching to OS X soon. :-)

If you have the full version of Toast, just use the CD Spin Doctor app
that comes with it to record vinyl, cassette, VHS, 8-tracks.... ;-)

When I won Toast 4 Deluxe (in Adaptec's slogan-writing contest) and
then upgraded to Toast 5 Titanium, there was an audio Y cable in the
box each time. And when I bought SoundJam MP, there was one included
too. So I've got audio cables to spare. ;-)
