Viewing .ai images with other programs?
I'm interested in finding out if there are other programs I can use to view images in .ai and .eps formats. I received a disc full of (important) images in these formats, and I do not own or have access to either AI or PS.
Being able to print and also to save the files to other file formats (.jpg/.tiff) would be ideal.
I use a pc with Win2k Pro.
Thanks - F. Corr

Re: Viewing .ai images with other programs?
Version 9+ ai (simplified description is that it is based upon pdfs and that they saved it with pdf compatibility)files can be opened in Acrobat. (never tried in reader though so I do not know if it can open it.)
Version 8 and below cannot. (based upon eps format) You can run these files through distiller first and then be able to view the pdfs.
You can place the ai format in InDesign and print it out but export functions are limited.

Re: Viewing .ai images with other programs?
Fitzhugh,
You can also rasterize both formats via Photoshop.
Also look into GhostView, a freeware/shareware Postscript interpreter

Re: Viewing .ai images with other programs?
This may be an improper suggestion, but could it not be a temporary solution to download a trial version of Illy, hoping it will not crash until the current images have been viewed and exported?
Warning: It may lead to an addiction and subsequent purchase.
