Viewing what an index marker is

Default Viewing what an index marker is

In PageMaker we were able to select the marker in the text editor and view the index entry connected to the marker. However, I can't seem to do this in InDesign. I can view the marker next to the text, and I can select it, but I can't seem to view the selected marker.
I know we can select an index from the index window, and go to it's location in the document, but I need to do the reverse.

    How do I do this.

Default Re: Viewing what an index marker is

Not sure what your ultimate purpose is here . . . You're trying to see how an entry is indexed?

If the index tags are created manually--as I would guess is most often the case--the index entry is going to be the text that follows the tag marker.

We import index entries generated via MS Access which do not necessarily reflect the text next to the tag marker, but it follows an in-house system, so we can "dissect" any tags we use.

Can you explain a little more about what you're trying to do?

Well, we often will have more then one index tag at a location in the text. The other problem is that some people place their index tags at the front of a paragraph, not always beside the key word. Also, we don't just enter index markers after all the writing is complete, sometimes it's done as the writing is done. We found that being able to check a specific index marker when using PageMakers was very useful for us.

That doesn't seem like it should be too hard -- but I can't see how to do it either. Possibly someone in the InDesign scripting forum would have a solution . . .
