VPN printers - SCO

I am in the process of setting up printer spooler where I would need to access a remote printer thru a VPN process. I have tried to set up the BSD style remote spooling (printcap) but the print jobs get stuck in the local print queue and never get to the remote printer. I can ping the remote server and I am able to telnet/ftp to it. The only thing I could come up is the fact that the VPN tunnel is configured as part of a Checkpoint firewall. What else should I be look at? -- Yves Leclerc...

I'd be looking at the Checkpoint firewall to ensure that port 515 traffic
is being allowed through. If you have a network tunnel, traffic should be
able to go through it. The fact that it is a VPN is beside the point.

I have been down the road you are traveling and after many moons
of frustration with remote printing, I never was able to make it
reliable. Some would get thru and then some would sit there
    until I killed them.

My suggestion (to save a lot of headaches) is to do transparent
printing. This will only work if they are using a terminal emulator
    that has transparent printing functionality.

I currently use transparent printing by using our character based
application, with AlphaCom and our clients are now happy.

Do a search on this group in google and you will find some
instructions about putting some codes in /etc/termcap for ANSI.

    http://groups.google.com/groups?oi=djq&as_q=ansi+transparent+printing&as_ug roup=comp.unix.sco.misc&num=100

Someone else here may be able to describe the procedure better so
    I will let them.

The other thing I tried, but was unsuccessful, was using the LPR
with netcat. You will find this on www.pcunix.com and search
for netcat. I was never able to figure how to get it to work so
    I forgot about it.

Our clients are now happy with the transparent print.
