Default WallStreet screen blacks out on startup

My wife's WallStreet 266 running OS 10.2.6 with ample ram and a 20 gig drive
has begun darkening the screen on startup. If, when it appears to have
loaded the finder, I press the brightness key, it gets fine again. But if it
goes to sleep, it won't get bright again, no matter which keys I press. I
can slightly see the dialogs, etc. on the dark screen, but it does me no
good, and I have to restart. I can't find anything on Apple's support site.
Also, my son just bought and set up a WallStreet 233 for his girlfriend,
loading OS 10.2.6, and although it works fine, I noticed that on startup,
right after the silver apple, her screen briefly goes dark, too, but then
gets okay. Can anyone offer suggestions? It doesn't matter if it's running
with the power adapter or battery. Thanks.

I have a G3/266 with the occasional same behavioral pattern and a
workaround that will most likely work for you.

    Short version:

Reboot into OS 9 and then back to OS X. Problem should be gone.
Set date and time as they are probably back in the early 20th century.

    Longer version:
This is what I have to go trough:
    1. try to make out from the faint image on screen and set start disk to
OS 9. Alternatively hit the bright button to get light and do the same.

    2. Go to startup disk and try and select OS X as the startup disk. If
the OS then freezes as mine does *every time*, do the three finger
salute: Cmd-opt-start button, wait for the repairs to be done and
repeat. This time the OS should not freeze.

    3. restart into OS X

    4. Set date and time as they are probably back in the early 20th
    century.

    Problem should now be gone.

I think this problem is related to the Power Manager, but after I found
out by accident rebooting into OS 9 would solve it, I haven't
investigated further to find a proper solution for the problem. It seems
to me be quite rare, but a few more individuals reported the same when I
posted to Macworldforums and macfixitforums. This workaround fix worked
    for them as well AFAIK.

Anyone have an idea for that or at least how to prevent the freeze in OS
    9?
