want a Free box only - Linux Setup, Configuration & Administration

After installing GNU/Debian sid, I decided that my box should only have free software in it. Then, how can I uninstall and/or replace software to achieve that? Is apt-get the solution? Should I edit /etc/apt/sources.list? What should I write / erase there? Thanks and regards from Chile...

    Hello

There are three sections in the debian archive:

main - software that complies with the DFSG:
    <http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html#guidelines>

contrib - software that is free, but depends on (maybe also
    suggests/recommends) non-free software

    non-free

Software in non-free is not included on the Debian CDs. Check your
sources.list. An entry for a Debian mirror could look like this:

deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian woody main contrib non-free

You can remove non-free to prevent packages from that section from being
    installed.

Package management tools like aptitude can tell you if you use packages
from non-free. Or you do it manually (no guarantee that this finds all
    packages):

    dpkg --get-selections | grep install | cut -f1 | xargs apt-cache show |
    grep -B2 '^Section: non-free'

And then there is also the "Virtual Richard M. Stallmann" package
    (vrms):

The vrms program will yze the set of currently-installed packages on
a Debian GNU/Linux system, and report all of the packages from the
non-free tree which are currently installed.

I rember there's a program for Debian called Virtual RMS that will tell
you if you have non-free programs installed. :) Unfortunately, it won't
remind you of contrib packages, which may depend on non-free stuff.

    Thanks, very useful tools.

VRMS is very good for newbies like myself.
