    Thick and Thin Text

    QUESTION:
Why is some of my text thick and some thin when I print my Illustrator 9 document?

    ANSWER:
    Solution:

Your Quality/Speed slider setting (in Document Setup) is probably not high enough. When a file containing transparency effects is printed, the file is broken down into pieces (or “flattened”), with some objects being printed as vector and some as raster. The Quality/Speed slider tells Illustrator how much of the file should stay vector and how much should be rasterized. Choose File>Document Setup and choose the Transparency option from the pop-up button at the top of the palette. Moving the Quality/Speed slider to the position farthest to the right will tell Illustrator to keep all objects in vector format where possible, and should ensure that your file prints correctly. For more information on the Quality/Speed slider, read the High-Resolution Printing & Export Quick Reference Guide, or the Printing & Export White Paper.

I do not like that my name is involved in this. I was just pointing towards another's solution. Although a great solution!

Even with the quality/speed slider all the way to the right (which is the default in AI 10 and higher) you can still get partial rasterization of type, depending on the type's position in the stacking order and proximity to a raster effect. Bringing type all the way to the front if possible will solve many a partial-rasterization problem.
