iPhoto definitely rocks, if you own a Mac. You might also want to try
Frontpage 2002's web photo album building tool. It offers several
different ways to setup the navigation, and it does auto-thumbnails
with links to the full size images if you just give it a folder of
pictures to work with. Frontpage, being a WYSIWYG HTML editor also
offers more flexibility than say an iPhoto in terms of custom design.

you might look at ePhoto Album: [url]http://www.picturegear.com[/url] they have a free
trial and reasonable price. The interface is a bit clumsy, however, it is
the only one I am aware of that sets captions, allows hierarchical trees,
and displays the site as it evolves.

I would love to hear there are others that offer these capabilities.

JAlbum - Sometime back someone posted about it on this newsgroup. It's free.
Great software and easy to use. I use it often in addition to Adobe
Photoshop Elements. Although Photoshop Elements too can create web albums, I
like JAlbum's interface much better. So I end up using Elements to do image
manipulations and then create albums using JAlbum.

I'm sure it's a nice program, but the same thing can be done with html
and tables. Once a basic template is made up, changes are no more
than substituting one <img= > for another.

Arles is $49.00. Another poster has suggested jalbum, a free program
which seems to do the same thing. However, the advantage of learning
basic html is that the user can go *beyond* the menu of pre-formatted
templates when the need or desire arises.

Using just web sources and examples, I learned enough html to
duplicate the Arles page in about a week of evenings. Lest the reader
think I'm some kid that grew up with a computer in his bassinet, I was
born before they were trying to crack the Enigma code at Bletchley
Park.

Jim,

it's easy to overlook that IrfanView can do it too.

I've already used it once and then modified the result by doing
global search and replace operations on the resulting HTML.

IrfanView is very good for pictures that are relatively small,
i.e. no more than 640 x 480 pixels. It automatically creates a
thumbnail page with clickable thumbnail pictures and one simple
HTML page for each of the big photos with previous and next
buttons.
